The Complete History of Coimbatore: From Kongu Nadu to the Detroit of the South

Coimbatore, affectionately known as Kovai, possesses a rich historical legacy that spans over two millennia. Originally settled as part of the semi-arid region known as Kongu Nadu, the area was governed by various tribal chieftains. During the 2nd century CE, Kovai was ruled by the Cholas, Cheras, and later the Pandyas, serving as an important inland trade route between the western Malabar coast and Tamilakam. The region later fell under the sovereignty of the Vijayanagara Empire and the Nayaks of Madurai, who fortified the region against rival kingdoms.

In the 18th century, Coimbatore gained strategic military importance under the Mysore Kingdom. Hyder Ali and his legendary son, Tipu Sultan, captured and reinforced the Coimbatore Fort, utilizing the town as a vital defensive bastion during the Anglo-Mysore Wars.
